Within a few weeks of the invitation going out for students to apply to study at Devon’s newest school, half the Year 10 places have already been applied for, ahead of the applications deadline of 31 October, 2014.
Two open events run in September by the South Devon University Technical College in Engineering, Water and the Environment attracted families from across the county wanting to learn more about the school.
The first students to put their names down for places at the UTC, which is due to open in September 2015, have come from feeder schools in Exeter, Totnes, Torbay and Newton Abbot.
The UTC is being built in Newton Abbot and will be supported by major employers from across the region, including South West Water, the Environment Agency, Centrax and Linden Homes. The school is also being backed by the University of Exeter and South Devon College.
The £10 million state-of-the-art UTC campus, where the engineers and scientists of the future will be taught, is being purpose built in Kingsteignton Road, Newton Abbot. The school is already attracting interest from talented and gifted young people who will be able to study there from the ages of 14 to 18.
Principal Designate Ian Crews said: “We only started taking applications a month ago and already we have had a very positive response from potential students and their families. Teenagers have been coming along to our open events with their parents, all really keen to find out more about what we can offer talented young people – both boys and girls – with a flair for science and engineering.
“We’ve even had grandparents arriving with their grandchildren, and everyone seems to be very impressed with what we will be able to offer the region’s young people.” The next open event for students and parents will be at the Courtenay Centre in Kingsteignton Road, Newton Abbot, from 10am on Saturday, October 18. Applications for Year 10 places can also be made online before October 31, 2014 at Devon County Council’s school admissions website https://new.devon.gov.uk/admissions/ and places will be allocated on March 1, 2015.
Sixth-form applications can be made directly with the South Devon UTC at www.southdevonutc.org until January 31, 2015.
