A Grade II listed building in Plymouth’s historic Barbican quarter is proving just the tonic for gin enthusiasts.
The Barbican Botanics Gin Room opened its doors earlier this month to offer around 100 different gins for tasting and retail sale.
Local property consultants Stratton Creber Commercial completed the letting of the former art gallery and offices at 38 New Street on behalf of the Plymouth Barbican Trust.
Agency surveyor Gavin Sagar says: “We are delighted to have assisted Doreen with the successful letting of 38 New Street. Barbican Botanics Gin Room certainly is an impressive, high quality business and fits perfectly in the historic Barbican quarter. I look forward to next visiting on a social occasion!”
The property has been completely refurbished to create a tasting room with seating area and relaxing chill out room on the first floor.
Owner Doreen Canele-Dow says: “We always knew we wanted a property in this area and, when we saw this building, we knew it was the one.
“The process of acquiring it went very smoothly and It has been great so far.
“Our opening week was really successful and we have had some lovely feedback. People like the old building in particular.”
Doreen, who already runs the flourishing subscription service Little Gin Box, says support for her new venture from suppliers and customers has been incredible.
She adds: “We have welcomed locals, business people and even students during our first week. People pop in for a gin and tonic and often end up buying a bottle or two.”
The building is one of 20 historic properties looked after by charitable organisation the Plymouth Barbican Trust with management services provided by North Hill-based Stratton Creber Commercial.
